Why not just Spring Boot Admin?
Spring Boot Admin (SBA) is often the first tool teams reach for when they want a solution over Spring Boot deployments. This page explains where Axelix fits relative to SBA: what problems Axelix was built to solve, and how the two products compare on capabilities and operations.
If you are evaluating both tools, read this alongside the Features reference and Motivation for the day-to-day problems Axelix targets.
Built by engineers who have used SBA for years
First of all, Spring Boot Admin is a mature, widely adopted project. It aggregates health, metrics, loggers, environment data, and other Actuator surfaces behind a single UI, and it has been maintained for many years by Codecentric.
The people who design and implement Axelix core have operated Spring Boot Admin in real environments for a long time. That experience shapes the product: the pain points below are not theoretical comparisons from a feature checklist, but recurring needs that standard Actuator exposure (and therefore SBA) did not satisfy in traditional enterprise setups.
Reason 1: SBA is bounded by Actuator; Axelix goes further
Spring Boot Admin works on top of built-in Spring Boot/Cloud Actuator endpoints. Whatever the Actuator exposes, SBA can surface; whatever Actuator cannot do, SBA cannot do either without custom extensions in every managed application.
That boundary matters in testing, debugging and finally production operations. Enterprise Spring Boot fleets routinely need to:
- Turn caches off or on at runtime, not only evict entries.
- Run, reschedule, enable, or disable
@Scheduledjobs without a redeploy. - See which SQL ran inside which
@Transactionalmethod, with per-execution timings, without standing up a full APM stack. - Inspect why a bean exists (dependencies, origin, qualifiers) and why auto-configuration took a given path.
Those workflows require code in the monitored application (custom endpoints, interceptors, enriched reports).
Axelix ships that logic in the Spring Boot Starter as dedicated
axelix-* Actuator endpoints that Master and the UI call. That is the primary reason the Axelix project exists:
Spring Boot Admin did not cover the operational depth teams needed when debugging live services in complex deployments.
For concrete examples of that debugging story, see Motivation.
Reason 2: Axelix is ready to install; SBA takes more assembly
The second major difference is how you run the console, not what you see on a single instance.
Spring Boot Admin is typically embedded in an application you have to build yourself, or deployed as a separate service you package and operate. The upstream project does not publish an official Docker image or Helm chart maintained by the SBA authors. Wiring OIDC/OAuth2, corporate LDAP, or fine-grained authorization usually means custom Spring Security configuration on top of your deployment.
Axelix Master is distributed as a ready-to-run product:
- Standalone JAR with the UI bundled — see Configuring Master.
- Official Docker image and Docker Compose examples in the same guide.
- Official Helm chart on Artifact Hub (source: the
charts/axelixdirectory of the Axelix repository).
Authentication is built in: either in local database for simple setups, or via OAuth2/OIDC (Keycloak, Auth0, Okta, Google, and
other providers) with role mapping — documented in
Authentication. Managed applications are protected by
JWT between Master and the starter; operation-level authorities (for example CACHES_TOGGLE, SCHEDULED_TASKS_MODIFY)
gate destructive actions in the UI and via MCP.
Another important note: the solid, tested and maintained authentication channel between Axelix Master and starters is already built-in. With Spring Boot Admin - you have to build it all up yourself.
You still add the Axelix starter to each Spring Boot service, but you do not have to build and secure the management console from scratch.
Feature comparison (battle card)
The table below compares typical Spring Boot Admin 3.x behaviour (Actuator-backed UI) with Axelix OSS. It is important to recognize that SBA deployments vary: some teams add custom security, notifications, or extensions. So keep in mind that theoretically SBA can be extended (by writing some code, packing it, deploying it etc) but Axelix ships the capability out of the box.
